About the Author
Joel Feinberg (Professor Emeritus, late of University of Arizona) was widely recognized as one of America's leading political and social philosophers. Acclaimed both for his ground-breaking scholarship and his exemplary teaching skills, Feinberg published widely on topics such as individual rights, legal theory, capital punishment, the treatment of the mentally ill, civil disobedience, and environmental ethics. Before joining the University of Arizona faculty, he taught at Brown, Princeton, and Rockefeller universities. Feinberg was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1987-88 to work in Japan and served as chairman of the National Board of Officers in the American Philosophical Association in the mid-1980s. Some of the royalties from Reason and Responsibility have been used to establish the Regents Professor Joel Feinberg Dissertation Fellowship in Philosophy at the University of Arizona.

Russ Shafer-Landau received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona and currently teaches at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he focuses on ethical theory and philosophy of the law. He is the author of THE FUNDAMENTALS OF ETHICS; MORAL REALISM; A DEFENCE; AND WHATEVER HAPPENED TO GOOD AND EVIL? He also serves as series editor for Oxford Studies in Metaethics.

For a textbook, it's really good. It's not dry. It is made of short essays and it does not go into too many details. It just gives the information. Weirdest textbook I have every read.

Half The Book is Missing on the Kindle Edition

I bought the kindle edition because this book was assigned as a textbook for my Philosophy class. When I downloaded and opened it up I noticed that half the readings that were assigned to me were actually not in the book at all, instead there was "Text not available due to copyright restrictions" typed up all over dozens of pages.

Needless to say, I am disappointed.

The book itself, however, is a good read, the selected articles are thought provoking and will leave you pondering about the ideas presented for days to come. One of my favorite pieces is John Pollock's "A Brain in a Vat"... too bad that it was also missing from the kindle edition.

I really didn't expect this from a company that I thought to be so reliable and thus (in my opinion and reasoning) gaining huge popularity - but i didn't know that this could happen and, moreover, I didn't know that I didn't know that this could happen.
I just couldn't resist lol

Best of Brooks in this Trilogy

This is Terry Brooks finest work. The descriptions are amazing. I could see the terrain they were going through. I felt the fear that the creatures, monsters, and "bad buys" evoked. The Reaper is the most terrifying creature I've come across and he never talks. The ElfStones of Shannara is the best part. So amazing. This is why Terry Brooks is in my top 10 favorite authors. Truly amazing. If you like fantasy and exceptional story telling, you will enjoy this book.

I personally enjoyed the depth of character building. The style of writing also makes it a good read. He doesn't go into gory detail or explicit sexual details. It's allusions and implied. So you won't be offended or horribly shocked like Brandon Sanderson's latest works. (So disappointed it's marketed to kids).

The trilogy is amazing. The MTV made for TV movies series doesn't do this justice.

A sentimental favorite fun fantasy

This series gets four stars from me based largely on the strength of the second book - Elfstones of Shannara which is a five-star book. The Sword of Shannara was good, albeit a bit too similar to Fellowship of the Ring for my taste. Wishsong is okay and entertaining but not earth-shattering by any means. The real diamond here as I mentioned is Elfstones. Brooks was finding his writing chops during this first series and the growing pains are evident. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy reading all three immensely, because I did. It is solid, fun, light-hearted fantasy that is comfortable to read and keeps you turning the pages. Excited that I am starting Heritage because I have heard that it is much better than the original Sword of Shannara books and that Brooks really hit his stride in that series. So far I have to say that I agree.

It's okay- better for younger readers

Alright, I grew up reading science fiction and fantasy. I admit I'm biased towards the science fiction side. Still, I quite enjoy the occasional romp through an alternate universe. I don't know how I missed The Sword Of Shannara before, but now I've read it and I'm not real impressed. The problem is that I'm in my forties and I've read an awful lot. The author claims it to be an early work of which he is both proud (for the story) and slightly embarrassed (for the execution). I tend to agree with him. Also, through the entire reading, I kept seeing the framework for The Lord Of The Rings. So much so that it became a distraction. To be honest, after a few pages into the second of the three books in this volume I couldn't take it anymore and stopped altogether.
Having said all that I want to add that this is prime material for young readers. I might have loved this if I'd read it at fifteen or so. It moves, has engaging characters, and is exciting at all the right times. There's no heavy moralizing. There's a clear villain and a hero to root for. And it's just grown up enough to be respectable.
I wouldn't recommend this to my friends, but I might recommend it to their kids.

About the Author
Anthony F. Molland is Emeritus Professor of Ship Design at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. For many years, Professor Molland has extensively researched and published papers on ship design and ship hydrodynamics including propellers and ship resistance components, ship rudders and control surfaces. He also acts as a consultant to industry in these subject areas and has gained international recognition through presentations at conferences and membership of committees of the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC). Professor Molland is the co-author of Marine Rudders and Control Surfaces (2007) and editor of Maritime Engineering Reference Book (2008). Stephen R. Turnock is Professor of Maritime Fluid Dynamics at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. Professor Turnock lectures on many subjects, including ship resistance and propulsion, powercraft performance, marine renewable energy and applications of CFD. His research encompasses both experimental and theoretical work on energy efficiency of shipping, performance sport, underwater systems and renewable energy devices, together with the application of CFD for the design of propulsion systems and control surfaces. He acts as a consultant to industry in these subject areas, and as a member of the committees of the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) and International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress (ISSC). The authors have collected and organized virtually all of the public domain data regarding ship resistance and propulsion of marine surface vessels into one significant reference book. It is a reference library in one volume. It will be of value to students and practicing designers who have limited access to a technical reference sources regarding surface ships and small craft.

This book compiles the most important systematic series and classical methods for estimating ships in the design stage. Easy to read and to implement in any programming language. The application examples of this book are a nice way to check your algorithms. Every Naval Architecture student should buy a copy to add in his personal library.

It has a lot of data and it would be a miracle if they were all correct.
