uses global environmental problems to drive the narrative

Maybe it is fitting that the book starts off by confronting a possible global environmental crisis of the 21st century. The limits to growth of the human population are studied. This leads immediately to the idea of a maximum carrying capacity of the globe.

The authors use this to segue into the rest of the book. Discussing in part the notion of sustainable land use, and by trying to properly account, in a bookkeeping sense, for the pollution costs of industry and of individual lifestyles. We see that more efficient use of raw materials is necessary, along with expanded recycling.

Later on, the book goes into important topics like human population trends and temporal and spatial variations in how people are scattered throughout the world. Energy generation is another key idea. Fossil fuels are the most important, but alternatives like nuclear and solar are mooted.

If you compare this text to others on geography written in the 90s, what you'll find is that there is now a sharper focus on global environmental problems. Traditional texts in geography tend to take a more didactic approach. The appeal of the new book is that it can better grab the student's attention by its relevance.

Long winded but informative, I feel like this text must tell you everything you could possibly want to kow about environmental geography up to it's publishing... so obviously it's not totally up to date.
It tells about as much as a documentary could... so maybe teachers should show movies since, like i said, this boook is dull dull dull.

The best of Gary Snyder, America's Zen Poet

I first heard of Gary Snyder when I stumbled across his answer to the question as to whether he would rather hear a poem by a raccoon or a possum. Snyder's answer was: "A raccoon's poem is alert and inquisitive, and amazes you by what a mess it makes. A possum's poem seems sort of slow and dumb at first, but then it rolls over. When you get close to it, it spits in your eye." I am not sure there is a clear cut answer there, but then Snyder, who received the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1975 for "Turtle Island," was first identified with the Beat movement before becoming an important spokesperson for communal living and ecological activism, so expecting him to choose between animal poems is probably a tad ambitious.
Snyder's poetry embodies the open-form experimentation of Walt Whitman, Allen Ginsberg and the Beats, as well as various "naked poetry" schools and movements from the 1960s to the present. He has also been strongly influenced at times by Japanese haikus and has listed among his influential/favorite poets Du Fu, Lorca, Basho, Pound, Yeats, Buson, Bai Ju-yi, Li He, Su Shih, Homer, Mira Bhai, and Kalidasa. Called by many a "Zen poet," Snyder's work is as likely to display a sense of humor as it is to deal with theological and aesthetic elements drawn from Zen and classical Japanese culture (e.g, "Axe Handles"). Snyder's earliest poems deal with the images and experiences he had working as a logger and ranger in the Pacific Northwest, which obviously instilled in him a love for not only nature but that which is ancient and mystical (e.g, "For All"). Of course, with a poet, it is always best to let the author speak in their own voice:

"No Nature: New and Selected Poems" contains parts of eight earlier published books by Snyder. This particular volume, published in 1992 and nominated for a National Book Award, contains an impressive selection of Snyder's best work across his long career.

Stripping poetry down to its bare bones.

Gary Snyder is a master of condensation. Somehow, using an economy of words, he conveys a clear sense of "the moment" -- sitting on a mountain top; snuggling by the fire; walking on a crowded street. It's a new kind of minimalist poetry that, once read, makes some of the older stuff seem, well, old. Snyder's forte is poems about nature. One of my favorites, called "Mid-August at Sourdough Mountain Lookout" consists of just 10 lines. But I've read it a hundred times, and the words still ring true in my mind. He writes: "I cannot remember things I once read / A few friends, but they are in cities. / Drinking cold snow-water from a tin cup / Looking down for miles / Through high still air." "On Nature" is a collection of Snyder's best and most important works. I highly recommend it.

Wonderful

If you have any love for wild places and the beauty of small things compassionately observed, this is a lovely and moving collection of poetry.

I was introduced to Snyder with this book back when taking IB English in high school over a decade ago, and despite not having appreciated poetry very much until then, I immediately felt a connection with his beautiful, sparse style and gift of observation. He never says too much - just enough.

It's still the book of poetry that I most often pick up, and I think the only book from that time that has accompanied me whenever I've moved (cities, countries) since then.

Helped me pass my social work licensure exam.

When I first became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) it was in the State of Louisiana. I remember secluding myself in this room all day and pouring over the wealth of information in this book. It was 1987. The book had just been published the year before. I was amazed at the wealth of knowledge that could be contained in a single volume of significant wisdom. It was to make the difference in my being only one of the 49 % of individuals that passed the licensure exam that year.

As a 1979 graduate of the University of Michigan Graduate School of Social Work, I remember having to study object relations theory and behavioral psychology. This was reviewed in Chapter 2 Psychoanalytic Theory by Herbert S. Stream, Chapter 6 Behavior Therapy in Social Work Practice by Ray J. Thomlinson , and Chapter 14 Ego Psychology by Eda Goldstein. Of course a number of my fellow students and I had, either at that time or while we were still in undergraduate school, volunteered to work in crisis centers which were very popular at that time. This is aptly covered in Chapter 12 Crisis Theory by Naomi Golan. Additionally I remember doing a group presentation in one of my classes on gestalt therapy. This is gone into in greater detail in Chapter 4 Contributions of Gestalt Theory to Social Work Practice by Michael Blugerman. Years later after passing my licensure exam and becoming further licensed in two other states (Florida and Georgia) I would refer back to the book for information such as is contained in Chapter 5 Cognitive Theory by Harold D. Werner, Chapter 7 Meditation in Social Work Treatment by Thomas Keefe, Chapter 16 Family Treatment by Sonya L. Rhodes, Chapter 18 Psychosocial Theory by Francis J. Turner, Chapter 19 Systems Theory by Margaret R. Rodway and Chapter 24 A Multitheory Perspective for Practice by Francis J. Turner.

As you can see, this book is rather comprehensive. It is an earlier edition of what is now in its fourth edition but it is still remarkably valuable, useful information not only for the social work student for those veteran social workers who have long been licensed but may occasionally need additional review.

Ultimate Singalong Review

The Ultimate Singalong has a wide variety of songs. Most are written for the intermediate piano player. The only drawback is the binding on the book which makes it difficult to keep open and turn pages. Otherwise, I am happy with the content and the experience with Amazon.
