About the Author
Stephen Lees is American, but attended boarding school in England. Having graduated from the University of East Anglia with a law degree, he then went up to Lincoln’s Inn to train as a Barrister-at-Law. His interests include classical music, the construction process and architecture. His non-fiction book, Visions of Architecture, was published in New York and London in March 2011 by Bloomsbury Publishers. The prequel to this novel, called The Iron Mausoleum – A Case of Sherlock Holmes and the Titanic, was published in London in March 2012.

A downfall, albeit a very small one, of Amazon is once your profile is in the system you get plenty of recommendations most of which tend to be pretty attractive. Giving credit where due, they tend to be right on the button. On several occasions music disks recommended were somewhat weak but those are the risks you take. This is my second review of a book by Stephen Lees. He has 3 books out, one a treatise on architecture and The Iron Mausoleum: A Case Of Sherlock Holmes and the Titanic. Amazon, always on the ball, grouped all 3 books together for order and, being architecture isn't really any of my interests, I passed on that one. At the least, I had two books by my recliner and was ready for some good reading.
The first book didn't do terribly well and those wishing my in-depth evaluation need only refer to its (not it's, Mr Lees) review. Although being somewhat shell shocked, considering the second book was paid for, the next stop was The Iron Vault. Now it is finished, I'll share my views.
Any who visualize themselves curled up on a cold evening with a good book are cautioned to be sure that book was not authored by Steven Lees. Although The Iron Vault is superior to The Iron Mausoleum, you are reading scant praise indeed. For further insights, put this particular review on hold and check out the earlier one. After finishing the second book I flashed back to a time when I labored under a delusion that I would play professional baseball. One day the coach put a fatherly arm about my shoulders and said, 'Son, you don't have what it takes to play pro ball. Your salvation will have to come from staying in school.' Sage advice.
It's my considered opinion that some kind soul should do the same for Mr Lees. Although I can only venture opinions on two of the three books, another viewer indicated the book on architecture was totally weak. So in the realm of writing, Mr Lees has a perfect score although swinging and missing 3 consecutive times exemplifies perfection one can do without. Have some specifics.
Mr Lees has broken some new ground in his characterizations of Holmes , Watson, and Mrs Hudson. They are described as surly , hostile individuals who think very little of each other. Nowhere, to my knowledge, in the vast Sherlock Holmes canon beginning with A Conan Doyle has this occurred. Holmes and Watson were lifelong friends. The one example where Holmes knew Watson was heading into a dangerous situation which could have resulted in bodily injury or worse yet Homes stood idly by was flabbergasting to say the least.
One can credit Mr Lees with wanting to educate the reader on architecture, early 20th Century composers and the like as well as loving details to some of the foods consumed in elegant restaurants at the time. Unfortunately the text rambles on and after some pages the reader starts asking himself exactly where the plot went or even what it is. Any expecting taut, coherent narratives won't find them here. In fact, the opposite is true. Readers curled in their favorite chairs will find themselves wondering if the book will ever end. Yes, it's that bad.
I face one final dilemma. One of my former English students is now English department chair at my old school. Periodically I'll take Amazon's suggestion and buy a Sherlock Holmes book that does not meet my tastes. Usually they will contain supernatural elements and other types of fantasy. She loves the supernatural and fantasy so she is happy to accept the books I don't want in my library. So here's the dilemma. What should I do with these two books? If I pass them on to her she'll have reason to consider me even more insane than she had previously thought. So after posting this review, these books go into the recycle dumpster with hopes that in their next reincarnation they will end up being used for something of higher quality than their first time around.

the book seems to be all about architecture and a travel guide to London rather than a Holmes / Watson adventure
