Set in a remote location in Chile, the story begins when a boys parents have their throats cut by a vagrant. In a rare moment of compassion, the murderer, Angel Allegros, decides not to kill the child. Paolos response to these events is curiously distant, as is the entire narrative. The boy is vaguely upset by, yet matter-of-fact about, his parents deaths. A second visitor, Luis Secunda, eventually appears and Paolo dispassionately asks Angel not to stab the man because he does not feel like digging another grave. The three settle into an uneasy routine, with the adults vying to be Paolos father figure. A necessary trip to buy livestock is the catalyst for a number of tragic and perhaps inevitable events, including betrayal, an attempted suicide, and capital punishment. The major plot line concerns Angels awakening conscience. Through his relationship with the boy, he begins to see the importance of life and love. While the books haunting, melancholy air will keep readers turning pages, the complex yet remote telling gives it the feel of South-American literature, which may hold more appeal for adults than for teens.–B. Then a young, wealthy traveler arrives, and at Paolo's insistence, the stranger settles into the improbable household at the end of the earth. Eventually, the trio is pulled back into the wider world, and its fragile connections are threatened and torn. The symbolism occasionally feels too purposeful, the characters more representational than real. But Bondoux asks the largest questions about crime, punishment, and how souls can change in language that is both visceral and poetic, and with unsparing, emotional truth, she describes a world in which the morality of the heart doesn't always match the morality of civilized society. Redemption In Many Forms

The Killers Tears is journey toward redemption. Seeking closure but finding and accepting that human beings are flawed.

Anne-Laure Bondoux created an isolated world where flawed adults see themselves reflected in the pure soul of a child named Paolo. The story begins with a ruthless wanderer, Angel, finding and murdering Paolo's parents on the isolated and rocky southern tip of Chile. Over time, Paolo adapts and the killer comes to depend on this, his first truly human relationship. In return, Angel shows Paolo love and genuine kindness that was missing from his stoic parents.

Eventually, however, the pair must travel to the city for supplies. And it is here that Angel's past catches up with him. While running again, Angel considers whether or not he deserves freedom or love, given all of the evil things he has done in his life. And this is the central question, asked and answered several times as Angel and Paolo evade the authorities.

There is a passage at an old lumberjack's (Ricardo Murga) house where the story moves into the mystical when Paolo meets the man's murdered children. In these passages Bondoux's prose soars - never needing to explain too much, trusting the intelligence of the reader.

Ricardo, "I like metamorphosis. He sighed and swirled the wine in his glass. Wood that becomes books. Winter that becomes spring. Grapes that become wine." He turned to Paolo. "And the child who becomes a man."

"Some changes are very subtle," the lumberjack went on. "Those which happen in our soul, for example, are not always noticeable."

My only complaint is near the end, where Bondoux loses faith in the reader and settles for heavy-handed anti-death penalty ranting that is unnecessary given the perfect way the rest of the story unfolds.

The Killers Tears gets my highest recommendation and while it is marketed for young adults, it is a powerful story for all ages.

THE KILLER'S TEARS tells a wonderful story of the love between a young child and a murderer. It has a wonderful word choice and is very well put together. A great read!!!

About the Author

Michael F. McTear

Michael McTear is Emeritus Professor of Knowledge Engineering at the University of Ulster with a special research interest in spoken language technologies. He graduated in German Language and Literature from Queens University Belfast in 1965, was awarded MA in Linguistics at University of Essex in 1975, and a PhD at the University of Ulster in 1981. He has been Visiting Professor at the University of Hawaii (1986-87), the University of Koblenz, Germany (1994-95), and University of Granada, Spain (2006- 2010). He has been researching in the field of spoken dialogue systems for more than 15 years and is the author of the widely used text book Spoken Dialogue Technology: Toward the Conversational User Interface (Springer Verlag, 2004). He also is a co-author of the book Spoken Dialogue Systems (Morgan and Claypool, 2010).

Michael has delivered keynote addresses at many conferences and workshops, including the EU funded DUMAS Workshop, Geneva, 2004, the SIGDial workshop, Lisbon, 2005, the Spanish Conference on Natural Language Processing (SEPLN), Granada, 2005, and has delivered invited tutorials at IEEE/ACL Conference on Spoken Language Technologies, Aruba, 2006, and ACL 2007, Prague. He has presented on several occasions at SpeechTEK, a conference for speech technology professionals, in New York and London. He is a certified VoiceXML developer and has taught VoiceXML at training courses to professionals from companies including Genesys, Oracle, Orange, 3, Fujitsu, and Santander. He was the main developer of the VoiceXML-based home monitoring system for patients with type-2 diabetes, currently in use at the Ulster Hospital, Northern Ireland.

Zoraida Callejas

Zoraida Callejas is Assistant Professor at the University of Granada, Spain, where she has been teaching several subjects related to Oral and Multimodal Interfaces, Object Oriented Programming, and Software Engineering for the last eight years. She graduated in Computer Science in 2005, and was awarded a PhD in 2008 from the University of Granada. She has been Visiting Professor in Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic (2007-13), University of Trento, Italy (2008), University of Ulster, Northern Ireland (2009), Technical University of Berlin, Germany (2010), University of Ulm, Germany (2012), and Telecom ParisTech, France (2013).

Zoraida focuses her research on speech technology and in particular, on spoken and multimodal dialogue systems. Zoraida has made presentations at the main conferences in the area of dialogue systems, and has published her research in several international journals and books. She has also coordinated training courses in the development of interactive speech processing systems, and has regularly taught object-oriented software development in Java in different graduate courses for nine years. Currently, she leads a local project for the development of Android speech applications for intellectually disabled users.

About the Author

Charles Foster lives in Riverview, New Brunswick. A pilot in World War II, he first visited Hollywood on leave and became lifelong friends with many of the Canadians he writes about in this exciting book. After the war he opened publicity offices in England and Hollywood, representing such personalities as Marilyn Monroe, Sir Laurence Olivier, Richard Burton, Boris Karloff, Errol Flynn, and Charlie Chaplin. He also wrote material for several TV shows and comedians like Jack Benny and Bob Hope.

Hollywood Babylon revisited

I thought that the subject of this book was interesting, and a book which explores it long overdue. Always cautious, I decided to get it from my university library before buying it. I am so glad I didn't waste my money on it. This book has good intentions but is full of unsubstantiated rumors-there are no source listings, there is no bibliography. The author bases his "information" on 60 year old meetings, and the readers are supposed to believe that his famous subjects revealed (to someone they just met) their deepest, darkest secrets. Did it happen? Perhaps, but I'd like to see some proof, any proof, for some of his wilder rumors. This is okay if you want a light, quick read - but for those with a serious interest in film history or who are looking for a scholarly discussion of the subject, look somewhere else. If you are interested in unsubstantiated rumors-this is just the read for you.

Entertaining but mostly fiction

It's a shame that this writer didn't stick to the facts, because he writes with some grace and keeps things interesting.
Unfortunately he has combined fact and fancy in what purports to be a non-fiction book. You will have to consult reputable histories to figure out what is reliable.

Can it be true? The unsolved 1922 murder of director William Desmond Taylor is really solved! Charles Foster, writer of this intriguing book about the silent era and its stars claims to have heard a confession, with others present, by the killer. I won't spoil your fun by telling you the murderer's name, but Foster has convinced me the murder is now solved. But there is much more in this remarkable book from a writer who met and befriended many directors, stars an technicians in Hollywood in 1943.Want to know why W.C. Fields enjoyed being hit in the face by a pie thrown by Three Stooges director Del Lord? Or why an actor named Sam De Grasse got a lifetime contract with Douglas Fairbanks as both actor and dentist? I consider myself an avid silent movie buff but have learned more fascinating things in this wonderful book than I learned in a lifetime elsewhere.The book moves from silents to early sound and reveals a lot of heartbreak and a lot of triumph. A totally readable book. I sat up to 3 a.m. finishing my copy and regretted reaching the final page. This is a must book for every movie enthusiast who wants to know the truth about early Hollywood. Percival's Tamil Dictionary

Being a dictionary, this is for nothing more than reference. Despite the size, it does have quite a few entries. Unlike Oxford English-Tamil Dictionary which seems to give meanings in long sentences, Percival's provides equivalent Tamil words and synonyms. Those looking for meanings, go for the Oxford dictionary but those needing word equivalents, go for Percival's.

As far as how quickly it arrived and whether the book was as described, I say yes to both.

Aware living

Provides instruction and guidance for moment-by-moment balance and awareness, much like an extension of zazen and yoga to walking, running, standing, sitting, child-birth, turning on a light switch. Simple instructions like 'picture any action the instant prior to doing it.'

This also dispels such notions about the Alexander Technique as doing-a-movement 'right'. It has nothing to do with Right or Wrong, just with aware living each moment.

The Alexander Technique Manual: Take Control of Your Posture and Your Life

This was an excellent book for someone like myself who was looking for literature that would enable me to get significant benefit from the Alexander technique without taking lessons. My goal was to apply the technique to piano which I am trying to relearn in my senior years. What I learned in the book is helping me a lot.
