About the Author

Vittorio Bertocci is a Senior Architect Evangelist in DPE and a key member of the extended engineering team that produces Microsoft's claims-based platform components (e.g. Windows Identity Foundation, ADFS 2.0). Excellent WIF resource

This is a must have for any anyone tasked with writing claims aware applicatons. Do NOT let the size of this book fool you either - it is jammed full of critical details. This is the only publication available that goes into the detail that Vittorio goes into. Whether you're new to claims-based development and just want to know enough to get started writing Relying Party's (that's about the first 50 pages), or need the in-depth knowledge of how protocols work, intricate details of WSFAM and SAM, and such, this book has you covered. I also like how Vittorio draws attention to solutions to some common problems, such as home-realm discovery, pass through claims, impersonation, proof-of-possession, custom STS's, and more. You will also find references to some very useful tools to aid in your development.

Excellent resource to get started with WIF

Having followed Vittorio's work (blog, webcasts, code samples)related to claims-based identity over the last two-three years, I ordered this book as soon as it arrived. And this book did not disappoint. I read the book cover-to-cover within a week of its arrival and found it to be very useful in helping me better understand the concepts behind WIF.

Here are some additional details that I hope will be helpful to anyone considering this book:

1) Claims based identity is an important enabling technology that .NET developers and designer need to understand well. And this is not just case, if you are an ASP.NET or WCF developer. Claims-based identity is important even if you are SharePoint, BI or Azure developer.

2) This book is broken up into two parts. The first part explains the basics of claims based identity. Second part is more advanced and gets into the nuts and bolts of WIF.

3) Don't skip over the ASP.NET chapters (2, 3 & 4 ) just because you are not going to use WIF inside ASP.NET. These aforementioned chapters cover a number of important concepts ( such as single-sign-on, claims transformation, federation) that you will need to understand when using WIF outside of ASP.NET (say with WCF).

4) Being involved with the WIF team for a long time, Vittorio is able to provide important context around how some of the features have evolved, design decisions etc.

5) Last but not the least, it is hard to write a book on security. Fortunately, Vittorio has managed to write it in a conversational, unassuming style that makes it easy to read. Wherever needed, he provides a just in time, overview of protocols ( WS-Trust, WS-Federation and so on) without getting mired in the details associated with these, rather arcane, specifications.

Long on Talk, Short on Code

If you're looking for a semi-exhaustive explanation of plumbing and details, this might be the book for you. Maybe.

I was looking for some code samples and reasonable quick-start type guides to at least get a proof of concept up and running, but there is no sort of cohesion to the book that makes it possible. The first part labors on about federated identity and fundamentals, which is fine to an extent. However, it just keeps going on with theory... again, which is fine if you want to sit and read a book to learn about federated security.

A preferred approach, and the one followed by most good technical books, is to start with a basic example and explain the theory behind it in small chunks.

I was surprised by how frustrating this book is based on the other reviews, so maybe I'm missing something everyone else is getting. But, if you're looking for a reasonable quick start to WIF with meat to back up the code, this probably isn't a good fit for you.

an important missing link

If there is an heir to Chapelle's "History of the American Sailing Navy," it is this book. The format is somewhat similar, but with the inclusion of photos in addition to plans. This book picks up where Chapelle left off, with the early steam ships of the US Navy. These are the ships of fame of the Civil War, on which little good information is avaliable. The steam frigates are covered in detail, as well as the sea going sloops and gunboats. The section on the USS Michigan does not do her justice, nor is there a lot information on the engines of the period, but this book is an important missing link in US warship design history from the USS Constellation to the steel hulled ships of the Great White Fleet. Well worth the purchase price to a person interested in period naval archecture, as is VOL II, The Ironclads, and his book on Revenue Cutters.

A much overlooked bit of history

An interesting and curious Russian simulation for the PC called, "Ironclads: Anthology" is what really captured my interest in steam powered frigates, sloops and gunboats of the Civil War.

When you read about the Civil War, it is the land battles that dominate with the naval conflict usually a mere footnote. But the Federal navy experienced a fascinating evolution from an all sail navy to a steam navy very early in the 19th century. The first line of warships used in the Civil War were propeller driven, wooden steam vessels built by the US Navy in the 1840s and 50s.

This is a great, detailed, historical narrative about those ships that came to put a stranglehold on the South with an incredible 3500 mile long blockade. It is an in depth history of the several ships, ordinance, and machinery that did the job. Great photos. Some have never been published before. The steam engine and propeller were still highly experimental during this period. The US navy and many early ships suffered with absolutely mediocre power-plants. Much credit must go to the engineers who operated these ships, and who kept them running during war and bad weather!

A readable history of the U.S.Navy's transition from iron men and wooden ships to wooden men and Iron ships, with procurement fiascos equal to any today...... Say to say that the U.S.S. Hartford, of New Orleans and Mobile Bay fame, survived at the Brooklyn Navy Yard untill 1959, then sank at her moorings and was finally scrapped....UGH!

Fantastic Read!

Martina Cole is one of the best authors out there today because she is writing what she knows! She uses her own experiences and writes over-the-top best sellers. The areas in the underworld of England is where she pens a lot of her books and they are just so interesting and full of surprises as to what people do when they are hungry, cold, poor and wanting a better life. In this book; a young girl basically sells herself to a pedophile for a chance to have a life of good food, clothing and all of the basic things people should have. She achieves all of this and succeeds in maintaining a higher standard of living once she is free of the pervert. Loved the book!

Exhilarating page turner

Goodnight Lady is my favorite Martina Cole novel. It starts out with a child named Briony Cavanagh and the horrible and disgusting things she had to do in order to survive and make it in her world. The novel spans decades and is an interesting and well written account of Briony's life right up til she is 90 years old. Loved it and can't wait to read the rest of Ms. Cole's novels. BRAVO!!

Love Martina Coles books- she has never failed in providing an interesting absorbing read and seems to just keep going - thank goodness I couldn't bear her to stop writing. her characters are larger than life and close to life. Martina cole
knows the criminal underworld she writes about, it feelsbas though she has lived and breathed it- she is able to enter the world of villains, skulduggery, abuse and violence and weave it into,compelling stories. I was a probation officer in my other life and Martina writes about the world I stood at the edge of and whose clourful people I loved and strove to understand even a little. Good one Martina we love u.

It offers a unique perspective of one of the most famous battleships to ever serve the US Navy. From her prewar ‘show the flag’ cruises, to her Pearl Harbor sortie, and her resurrection and triumphant return to the fleet. Served in both the Atlantic and the Pacific Theaters during WWII she acquired a reputation for extremely accurate gunnery that was next to none. She was also known as a ship that would not hesitate to sail at full speed into harms way to support the troops on the beach. After WWII when the clock ran out for Nevada, she was designated as target ship. As such, she was twice atomic bombed and then withstood the sustained gunfire from another battleship, three cruisers, and eleven destroyers, but she defiantly refused to sink. Nevada finally succumbed to two torpedoes. A complete chronology of Battleship Nevada is also included. As is a look at various models and memorabilia of the ship over the years. This book is for both those would just wish to learn more about this great ship, as well as the dedicated naval historian Also included are sections on the State of Nevada which is celebrating it’s 150th anniversary in 2014 .

Amateur Effort by a Good Naval Artist

An OK overview of the USS Nevada's career lacking written information. Author is a proud Nevada based artist with many of his pictures in the book, but they are reproduced in a format way too small to be of any value. Many external pictures of Nevada, but all have been previously published. Author only gives brief descriptions of ship's history with absolutely no depth. Almost no technical data. Insignificant info on salvage effort. Poor ships history of WW II. Lots of very small pictures but none are new (previously unpublished) info other than an interesting section on Nevada hobby models. Much less data than the typical Vanguard series book at twice the price. An OK amateur effort but all in all not worth the price. I was looking for something similar to Stillwell's "Battleship Arizona" and was very disappointed.

It is about time someone recognized this incredible ship and its crew. If you asked everyone in the U.S. to name the only battleship at Pearl Harbor to get underway, the ship that shot down 25% of the attacking japanese planes on 12/7/41 (and lost 60 men), the ship that received 7 Battle Stars in WWII, the ship that was the flagship for the Normandy Invasion, served at Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, served in WWI, was nuked twice yet still didn't sink, was the only ship whose hull number is also its namesake's states number of the 50 in the Union (36)...what would they say? Probably not the Nevada.

I salute all those who served aboard the USS Nevada, (BB-36), and the many who were lost. I commend Mr. Wayne Scarpaci for writing this book, and his amazing art contributions in this book as well. Well done, Sir.

I am just gonna say I loved this story

Choosing an Alpha This story starts off with Asher chasing Neve and Mal. I don't want to spoil it for anybody. I am just gonna say I loved this story. This was a terrific ending. It was truly a love story as well as being extremely erotic. I will miss these characters. I definitely recommend this as a must read. I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Wow , and just Wow.... This is the final installment in this series... So many thing happen in this book I am not sure I can describe them all to you.. and I really don't think I want to give you too many details... This was one of the most enjoyable book I've read in while. I am going to give you a brief view into Neve life with 3 Alphas.... Yes you heard me right .... 3 Alphas
Mal risked his life & pack to safe Neve from Asher.. Neve returns to Michigan to find out that Pat & Harold threaten to kick all the packs from their land if they didn't save Neve from Asher
Neve is now mated to Mal, that was the only way to get Asher off their trail . Mal wants Neve all to his self.. He not willing to share her with the rest of the pack
Neve feel lose without Tucker & the rest of the pack. Neve might be mated to Mal, but her heart belongs to Tucker
The third alpha.... the mystery of the third alpha will be revealed in this book .....you'll have to read the book to find out who that 3rd Alpha is... Trust me you'll really enjoy this book

Loved everything about this series!!

I'm trying to gather myself after reading this so I can try to express how I feel about this series. This series was such an amazing and intense ride. Oh the feels I have right now. I was sucked in this world the author created and I didn't want it to end.

Alot happens in Choosing an Alpha so I don't want to give too much away. Neve is finally reunited with her pack and she tries to get back to the life she had before she was taken by Asher. Even though she knows she made certain decisions in order to survive and move on, she can't help but think of Tucker. Her heart will always belong to him even though she is now mated to someone else.

How this story unraveled was definitely a surprise. I was beginning to accept how things were going and how I thought it was going to end. But once again the author had alot up her sleeves let me tell you. I can't get over the ending and epilogue..loved it! I'll definitely be reading this series more than once. More super sexy werewolf shifters please!

Handy for those of us who need a quick general reference

I'm a retail pharmacist. Reading guidelines is a good use of our time, but constantly memorizing the specific details for every disease state would consume most of one's life.

This book would be invaluable only because it tells you which guidelines are currently used for each disease state, making them easy to find. The synopsis of the actual recommendations from each of of guidelines is just a nice bonus.

I use it as follows:

1) Encounter a prescription that seems clinically off
2) Check book for disease states that the drug is used to treat (9/10 times I can find the information I need in the synopsis in the book, so I stop here)
3) Pull guideline book references, study the relevant parts
4) Either confirm the propriety of the prescription or call the prescriber if there is a clinically significant variance from the guideline, have synopsis right there to quote if necessary.

I really wasn't too happy with this purchase

I really wasn't too happy with this purchase. I absolutely love the original Current 2017, but this is in a different format, using bullets, which I don't like- there's not as much detail as I'm used to. It's organized alphabetically instead of by system which makes it difficult/annoying to navigate. Definitely wouldn't suggest it.
