Magically bringing history back to life are 340 illustrations, 21 of them in color. The result is a riveting saga of American theater history, raw courage by a few patient dreamers, glittering Palm Beach society of the 1960s and 1970s, and a noble but bitter preservation fight to save America's perfect town. Royal Poinciana Playhouse History Filled With Nostalgia

Memories for the Future is a very readable and nicely produced history of the Royal Poinciana Playhouse in Palm Beach. The Poinciana has been the subject of ongoing tugs of war between developers who want to raze it and preservationists who want to save the place that closed its doors in 2003. Thomas Clarie's book is essentially a year-by-year, decade-by-decade history of the theater and, therefore, a large part of Palm Beach as well. The theater's programming never really changed: big, slightly past-their-prime stars in vehicles - Private Lives starring Richard Kiley and Tammy Grimes; The Front Page with Ray Milland; Dial M For Murder with Joan Fontaine and Jeffrey Lynn. There were some exceptions - Othello, with James Earl Jones and Christopher Plummer, Barrymore with Plummer again, but not many. Winter stock, as it were. The audience and the actors both began to die off around the same time, and the theater could never find a market again. Clarie's book is chock full of nostalgic photos, reviews and history of the theater's changing managements. It's a valuable piece of Palm Beach history.
